Implant based reconstruction

Implant based reconstruction

Breast implants are also very commonly used for breast reconstruction, alone or in conjunction with autologous flaps. Implants used in breast recon are the same as implants used in cosmetic breast surgery. Implant based reconstruction is attractive to some women because the implantation surgery itself is simple and there is less down time recovering from the surgery. Patients usually go home the same day in contrast to patients undergoing DIEP flaps who frequently stay in the hospital 3-4 days after surgery. Implants are not without drawbacks however. Because it’s made of foreign material, it’s not considered permanent. We usually recommend patients exchange their implants in 10-15 years. If an implant gets infected, it usually needs to be removed and the reconstruction process has to start again from the first stage. (See Implant_based recon photos)
